After a painfully slow start to 2019, multiplexes will suddenly get overwhelmed this weekend with the release of Captain Marvel. It’s not a question of whether this movie will be successful, but rather how successful. It should easily pass $100 million (conservative predictions have it at $125 million) but it would probably be a stretch to hit Black Panther-type numbers. Considering it is such a big release there is very little in the way of competition this weekend, but Vincent D’Onofrio’s western The Kid starring Ethan Hawke and Dane DeHaan is playing on over 250 screens and A24 is also releasing the acclaimed Chilean film Gloria Bell. There have been a couple of competing John DeLorean biopics in the works over the past few years, the first of which (Nick Hamm’s Driven) starred Lee Pace in the lead role and screened at some festivals last year. Now here is Framing John DeLorean, a mix of documentary and fictionalized re-enactments not unlike American Animals with Alec Baldwin playing John DeLorean and Morena Baccarin playing his wife, supermodel Cristina Ferrare. Although DeLorean is best known for creating the sports car that would be immortalized in Back to the Future, his life had its share of ups and downs. After struggling to get his own car company off the ground, he was arrested in the early ’80s for drug trafficking. The movie is directed by Don Argott and Sheena M.

I think it goes without saying that the final season of Game of Thrones is going to be one of the biggest motion picture events of the year right up there with Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: Episode IX.

Fans have been waiting almost two years for the conclusion to this epic series and there are just six episodes remaining. This week HBO released the first official trailer, reminding us where we all of the various characters are at leading into the final battle between the living and the dead.

After the powerhouse directorial debut that was Hereditary, you better believe I am excited to see what writer-director Ari Aster does next. Fortunately for us, his next movie is arriving later this summer once again courtesy of A24. This time around he is delivering a creepy “Scandinavian folk horror” called Midsommar and although the plot is still mostly unknown it seems to revolve around a cult-like summer festival in Sweden. Midsommar stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper and Will Poulter and it hits theatres on Aug.

The original Critters was released in 1986 and although it was supposedly in development before Gremlins, it does happen to involve small, furry creatures terrorizing the residents of a small town. The movie spawned three sequels, the last of which was released in 1992, but now decades later we are getting a live-action series courtesy of Shudder and the writer/director team behind Zombeavers and The Drone. If that’s not enough, Syfy also supposedly just on a brand new (unrelated) Critters movie. When it was originally announced that Jason Reitman would be directing a new Ghostbusters sequel, soon afterward reported that the movie would mostly focus on a new generation of teenage Ghostbusters (two boys and two girls).

At the time, it seemed likely that the popularity of things like Stranger Things and It had helped pave this new direction and now this week it seems we have some indirect confirmation of that fact.
